The Ram – Setu Jinx

Much has been said and done with regards to this very hot topic of Ram – Setu bridge and the proposed project which many think will put this epic turned historical structure in jeopardy. For those who don’t know anything about it, there is a natural bridge between India and Srilanka, which is visible from Satellite and is believed to be built by Ram and his force on the way to attack the king Ravana who abducted Ram’s wife Seetha. Rama is the incarnation of God in the epic Ramayana written by Valmiki and is worshiped as a God by Hindu’s across the world. For more info…try Google J

The project to make a canal dredging some part of this natural bridge to save the extra fuel burnt, became a national issue when the govt. gave an affidavit to the court stating that there is no historical proof that Lord Rama has built it – which scientifically may be correct. But certain beliefs can’t be scientifically proved can they? Now the so called protectors of Hindutva, BJP and VHP took this up a question mark on Hindutva and started performing a nation wide protest. As usual they ransack public properties and transportation J Come on guys, grow up stop throwing stones at public transport vehicles … its not just bought by the taxes you pay (if at all you pay), but also the tax we the working class pay. Don't let the common man suffer for this!

I am not here to question the authenticity of the beliefs; rather my point is to express my concern about the validity of this project itself. As my friend Kannan rightly pointed out, this project has nothing to do with the development of this country and is only for the glorification of a local political party, I too condemn this project.

It shows the pathetic situation our country face these days, degrading values and to what level political parties go to stick to power. This has been the biggest curse for my corruption-hit country India for decades and a solution for it never seems to be coming. Parties try to do anything or oblige to anyone for anything to get the majority to rule and often project like this which defies logic, which becomes a liability to the nation and its taxpayers is emerged out of nowhere. One of the reason why I haven't voted so far... just because I don't think any of those guys who stood for election good enough!

One more reason I would oppose this project is the risk this project brings to the nature’s balance. Most of the time you change something which nature has built, it has its own effect on the eco system as well. Who can assure that there wont be a natural calamity because of the change in this natural structure? And how about the rich habitat under the sea and its effect on its sea floor… how would it affect the local fisherman in that region? I think none of this has been studied or even considered before approving a project of this scale!!

After all when it comes to power, who would bell the cat!
