I tried watching few news channels for the last couple of days and couldn’t help but going back to the news paper after throwing the remote to the floor. It seemed as if all the channels especially news channels were the sponsors for team India. Though I too rejoice the victory of our national team’s world cup triumph against the archrival Pakistan, I never thought the celebrations would go on for so long. Even Italy would not have celebrated world cup soccer win to this fashion.
Question is, Is cricket that big of a thing?
99.99% of the Indians would say YES, but I being in the other segment would say “maybe for few but not really that big for me”. Yes I do play cricket and I am a medium fast bowler and middle order batsmen. However, as a game, I still rate Football the most loved and watched game across the world.
Nevertheless, its not who is big which I am going to describe here, my point is who is small. Hockey is India’s national game and been in the newspaper all these years for all the very wrong reasons. Let it be on the fight between coach and player or the politics; when it came to criticism, Hockey was always at the receiving end. Moreover, when they finally pulled of a memorable tournament such as Asia cup, our same government who shed millions for the cricket players did nothing for the Hockey players. There can’t be an argument such as cricketers put more effort or it takes moving a mountain to be a cricketer. Yes, it requires dedication and hard work, but it goes for all the games and sports.
Being one of the most populated countries, our football team is still way down when it comes to world ranking on football or even hockey. This is not because we don’t have money, just that the attitude needs to change for both us and the government… guess the later would change automatically if we change first.
I felt pity for those news channels that they had to fill their schedules with cricket for the last few days or so. Never knew our country is so saturated without issues!
Who would bell the cat!
